Hormone Imbalance and SLS |
In the past 100 years or so, we have seen a lot of new health problems appear in society. From PMS / PMT, menopausal symptoms have increased dramatically, and more recently, a huge drop in male fertility. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, or SLS, is shown to most likely be a major contributor to this, due to its estrogen mimicking qualities.
Estrogen is a hormone that is found in both Men and women. Like all other hormones, they are controlled by the circulating levels of our glands in our bodies, which determines how much is present in our cells. SLS plays a key role here. Not only does it irritate the skin, but it is absorbed by the skin as well. The molecule attaches to estrogen receptors, mimicking our natural hormones in the body system.
This results in hormonal chaos . The body loses control on how to manage its own estrogen levels, as it can't tell the difference between Natural estrogen and the SLS molecules that have invaded them. In men, estrogen levels are very low, but when this chaos causes an increase in those levels, the result is breast enlargement and decreased male hormone levels, which reduce sperm count dramatically, as well as the mobility level. These have a negative effect on the ability to fertilize.
In women, the estrogen and progesterone levels are high, and completely control the reproductive system. When estrogen levels increase, an imbalance of these two hormones causes the body to get confused, creating menstrual problems, increased menopausal symptoms, and, in some, infertility.
Disturbing as this is, despite all clinical studies that indicate SLS is harmful, it is still the number one active ingredient in virtually all soaps and cleansers. For years, we have been applying proven irritants to our skin on a daily basis. What’s really scary is that they don’t have to be regulated, even though they are labeled "deadly if ingested" in it's raw form, and cannot be publicly transported.
