How Many Hair Color Options Do I Have?

There are two main reasons why an individual wants to change their hair color. The main reason is to cover graying hair and the other is just simply a change to try something new. There are also several ways or techniques used to achieve the new hair color especially with the choice of hair dyes on the market today.

To put a hair color product into a classification it is dependent on how long the achieved effects will last. There are actually four classifications. The most substantial is what is called the Permanent color. If you want to go with something less drastic than you may want to consider hair highlights.

In order for a product to be classed as a permanent base color, it has to have certain ingredients. These are a developer, which is an oxidizing agent. It must have ammonia but this must also constitute an alkalizing ingredient as well. A suitable ammonia substitute is acceptable.

This product has to be able to raise the cuticle of the each hair fiber in preparation to accept the color. Otherwise the color would remain on the surface and not penetrate. It must then go onto formation of the tint within each hair fiber. The peroxide in the product is what constitutes the lightening action, which is necessary for the hair color to be effective. This is found in all permanent hair dyes.

Even those these products can be used on various hair types like oily hair for example, I would not recommend it for dry hair.

Then there is an in-between permanent to semi permanent hair color called demi permanent. Technology never stands still in any industry including hair. There has been a discovery that allows the color pigment molecules to remain smaller than those required in semi permanent products yet are larger than the permanent molecules.

They have cleverly achieved this by mixing the permanent hair color with a low volume developer. This is a readily accepted method of coloring the hair because it many ways it is much gentler to the natural hair. This is because it doesn’t strip the natural hair color. This allows the results to last longer than semi permanent colors but not as long as the permanent results.

The one drawback is they are not as effective on dark hair because of their inability to lift the natural color of the hair. Use these hair dyes with caution, as they tend to last longer than purported.

Semi permanent hair color is a great quick fix. For individuals who are experiencing hair damage for whatever reason, then this type of color can be used as a stand in while the hair is being nursed back to good health. Ideally, for individuals with type of hair damage they may want to use the quality hair care products.  Quality products are excellent for bringing damaged hair back to a healthy state.

The semi permanent hair color contains no peroxide so it won’t have the aggressiveness towards the natural hair that some other types of hair coloring does.

Temporary hair color is great for those that want to just experiment with a temporary change. They are not long lasting and weaken with repeated washings. They are not normally dramatic in their results but do afford some pleasant changes and give the hair a lift in its normal coloring. Remember hair dyes can be rough on the hair so don't over process your hair. Also protect your hair and its color from the harmful sun by wearing a hat or even a cap.
