Do Highlights Make Your Hair Thicker?

There have been several articles written based on the info provided by many hairstylists that say adding highlights or coloring your hair can make it look thicker. According to these findings, they claim that even a temporary coloring change can increase the volume of your hair regardless of the style.

These facts are based on the idea that when a coloring agent is applied the individual strands of hair can increase in volume as much as 3x the normal density. It’s not hard to figure out, that if you add something to your hair like color rather than stripping it, the thickness will increase.

There are many organic methods of achieving highlights or some coloring, while still maintaining its thickness without doing damage to the hair and its density. Unlike a bleach which does.  People who want to experiment with a shade much lighter than their normal hair color can strip the hair of its density. Many organic methods can give you the results more naturally.

Shampoo your hair and use a deep conditioner about 3 days before you want to add highlights or color, then don’t clean it again as most coloring agents ( natural or man made ) adhere better to dirty hair. It’s the oils in your hair that will protect it against damage during the process.

Believe it or not, you can get amazing coloring results and highlights from using such items such as lemon juice to bring out the blonde effects and cranberry to highlight the reds. If you are a brunette use a dark rich coffee or espresso, let it cool, then apply to hair for 30 minutes before shampooing. This method will make your hair richer and give it a better shine overall.

In many cases if you have darker hair and choose to go to much lighter shade you will need to bleach your hair. To keeps its thickness try bleaching it first before applying the color because a bleaching agent can reduce the density. Using a shade that is similar to your original one makes it easier for the color to adhere and may give a thicker appearance .

Many people have changed the shade of their hair without bleaching, but if doing so be careful as you may not end up with the exact color you were expecting even though it may appear thicker. When attempting a drastic change from dark to blonde you may end up with more reddish tints.

You don’t always have to color your hair to get a thicker appearance as there are a few other options available to you. When going to a lighter shade use lowlights as well as highlights as sometimes only one color may make your hair seem flatter and thinner. Sometimes a color weave will work as it gives it a multi-dimensional look. Maybe a different hairstyle like layering will work for you. If all else fails there are natural looking hair replacements out there to suit all needs.
