Pregnancy is a joyful time in any woman’s life. However with the joy of getting a new baby, come problems such as weight gain and hair loss due to hormonal changes. Most of these problems are quite natural and there is nothing to worry about. More than 90 percent women experience hair loss after delivery, especially in the first 3-5 months. This is perfectly normal and your hair will resume its natural growth within the first year of your baby’s birth.
Different women experience different things about their hair during pregnancy. For some the hair becomes thicker and shinier, while for others hair looks dull and limp. An increase in the level of estrogen during pregnancy results in increased hair growth, so they look thicker and shinier than normal or dull and limp in some women. However, post-delivery the estrogen levels go back to normal, resulting in hair loss. In some women there may be an imbalance due to diet or other reasons, leading to a higher rate of hair loss.
There are several home remedies for hair loss that you can used during and after pregnancy. This is a great alternative than using any medication, which may prove harmful for your baby. Massage your scalp with good oil such as olive oil or any product containing essential oils, as these are known to promote hair growth. Apart from this, hair packs containing egg or sage is also good for hair growth.
Make sure you avoid any type of hair styling unless absolutely necessary. Products such as hair color and hair gels can have adverse effect on your hair, resulting in increased hair fall. Also, if you must use hair care products, buy hair care products with natural ingredients. Look for ingredients such as keratin and Shea butter, which help in hair growth. Along with this, use a mild shampoo and conditioner till the time your problem is resolved.
Apart from taking care of the physical aspects of your hair, taking care of your diet will also help in restoring the natural balance of your hormones. This in turn will help take care of hair loss as well. Include lots of proteins, fruits and vegetables in your diet and avoid junk food and carbonated drinks for at least a year.
In case the problem persists or you feel the hair loss has increased, consult your physician for hormonal imbalance. Taking these steps will definitely help you get natural, lustrous hair back in no time.
