Changes In Hair Due To Aging

Change in hair color with age is a normal thing to happen. It implies that the person is ageing. The hair follicles produce melanin and that is how hair gets the color.  As the age progresses melanin product experiences a slowdown, leading to graying of hair.

Graying of hair is experienced by a lot of people from the age of 35 and beyond. This differs from person to person, because in some people deficiency of certain nutrients also leads to premature graying of hair. It first shows at the upper portion of the forehead called the temples. Further the color spreads across slowly towards the top portion of the scalp. Hair tends to become much lighter in shade with time and eventually turns completely white. Few people experience completely white hair as they approach their 40s. Both facial and body hair are likely to gray, but this usually occurs much after the hair on the scalp have turned gray.

Genetic factors play a significant role in determining the approximate age at which the person’s hair will turn gray. Compared to the Asian natives, Caucasians experience graying much early in life. Another fact related to graying is that even if the person takes substitutes for vitamins and various other nutrition options they will not assist in decreasing the speed of graying.

Apart from hair color the thickness and the quality of hair also changes. The life of a single hair is close to 5 years. Then hair wears out or falls off the scalp and a new hair grows at the same location. Again the overall density of hair is largely dependent on the person’s genetic make up. The rate of growth is definitely affected and therefore, it leads to hair fall as well.

This means that if a person had thick black hair in his or her youth the person will slowly develop thinner and lighter hair. The density decreases because new hair does not replace the ones which have fallen off.

Around 25% of men start showing the typical male pattern baldness as soon as they reach the age of 30 years. Many women too face such concerns of hair losing their density. Women also develop a kind of baldness on the centre of the scalp. Facial as well as body hair also experience certain changes such as they shed more often and become rough too.

There are a number of hair care products which can take care of various factors which amount to premature graying of hair. These products contain the nourishment required for hair and help restore the natural texture of the hair.  It is best to use products containing natural ingredients. However, you must consult a doctor in case you suffer from any scalp diseases, before using any hair care products.
