What is the Difference between Psoriasis and Eczema?

People are often surprised when their particular skin condition affects their scalp. Being as this area is totally shielded by hair, we often forget that is a part of our largest organ of our body, which is our skin. Therefore, it is just as susceptible to skin ailments. Most of the time though you will see that it doesn’t become as affected as often. There are two common skin problems though that can affect the scalp and that is eczema and psoriasis.

To begin with, if you have any type of skin problem that doesn’t seem to be going away then your Doctor should diagnose it. There are some problems in an area that if they do affect the scalp then it can cause hair loss and hair thinning. If the hair loss becomes severe then you can be faced with baldness.

It’s not just enough to determine that you have a skin problem in order to treat it correctly; it must be identified as to what are, the possible cause and the most effective treatment.

Looking at eczema in the Greek terminology means “boil out” where psoers means, “itch”. These conditions have no respect to age so anyone one male or female can be afflicted with it. It would seem that chemicals that are strong in nature such as perfumes or detergents for example are often the cause of eczema. This is one reason why you want to avoid using harsh shampoos or strong chemicals that can be found in hairspray.

When it comes to the causes of psoriasis, it seems to be caused more by irritants from the environment. This again tells you that your scalp and hair need protection by proper cleansing and the right products. This doe’s not mean psoriasis is a result of poor hygiene; it just means that some people are sensitive to the different components that it consists of.

For the untrained eye, it can be difficult in distinguishing between these two skin problems, which is often the case with most skin afflictions. If the lesion appears like small blisters that are raised and the skin is dry then it is most likely eczema. If the skin appears to be scaly or rough and red also raised then it is probably psoriasis. Both conditions can be itchy.

They are both very irritating and troublesome conditions to be afflicted with and treat as well. If they have affected the scalp, it just adds to the misery of having these problems. Treatment will vary, as there doesn’t seem to be an exact cure, but if it has affected the scalp them medicated shampoos will likely be one thing on the agenda for treatment.

Psoraisis can be more serious in nature as it can affect other organs of the body such as the joints for example. In some ways, it has a similarity to arthritis.
