In most cases, hair problems have a correctable underlying cause whereas hair and scalp diseases will often require medical intervention based on very different causes. Hair problems are the more common issues such as dry or oily hair conditions. Over processed or split ends or the frizzes for example. These are all hair problems.
Most skin conditions of the scalp fall into the scalp disease category. At anytime you are unsure as to whether your hair is a problem or your scalp may be suffering from a disease it is important to see your Doctor. Once he has determined that it is a scalp disease he will take on the responsibility of treatment. If it turns out to be one of the common hair problems as we outlined then most often you will have to find the solution.
There is more serious hair problems that are not easily correctable but still do not really qualify as a scalp disease. Dandruff for example in most cases is a troublesome problem, but then at other times it can be severe enough to technically come under the hair and scalp diseases category.
In any event, once your Doctor has assured you there is no medical problem such as a severe scalp disease that requires his intervention then you still need to find a solution. If the problem is dandruff for example then you need to seek out and use medicated shampoos that are specifically formulated for the treatment of dandruff.
If the itchy scalp turns out to be lice then this is sort of an in-between with the hair and scalp diseases and scalp problem. The Doctor will definitely treat it but most often, it is easily recognizable and people don’t go to the Doctor with it unless it is very severe or it just keeps reoccurring. It is certainly recognizable by the lice eggs that are formed over the hair shafts.
Graying of the hair for the most part is considered just a natural aging occurrence. Premature graying can be another matter entirely. This can be caused by emotional trauma or stress, or even diseases like thyroid problems. Some have even indicated that the lacking of vitamins can play a vital role in this problem. It is not considered a scalp disease.
Hair baldness can be because of male pattern baldness, which is quite often hereditary. Then there are some hair loss conditions that occur for many other reasons including hair and scalp diseases. Perhaps the usage of too many harsh products. Underlying medical conditions, or unhealthy hair.
No matter what the problem first you must determine what is, especially if it is one of the hair and scalp diseases and secondly what caused it and finally how to treat it. Then from there it becomes the priority to maintain your healthy hair once you have brought it back to that stage and to attempt to prevent scalp disease in the future.
