Trichorrhexis Nodosa

Hairs are an important part of our body. Rarely do people realize its importance and probably they do only when they start facing a medical condition regarding their hair. Alopecia, Scleroderma, Dandruff, Trichtolomania, Psoriasis and Trichorrhexis nodosa are some of the areas of concern regarding your hair. These conditions are only because you have not paid enough attention to the health of your hair. Sometimes even though you do take good care of your hair, problems develop because of genetic inheritances.

Trichorrhexis nodosa is a medical condition of hair which few people go through. It is a defect of the hair shaft Trichorrhexis nodosa, found in the most significant area of the hair fiber. When your dermatologist sees your hair through a microscope he will notice numerous swelling and fraying nodes. These nodes in such a condition may be found only in certain parts of the hair strand. This condition develops when there is no cuticle layer found in the originally growing hair strand. It is a defect in the basic structure of the hair growing on your scalp.

The basic job of a cuticle layer is to extend support and protect hair from the harmful UV rays. Sometimes it is the chemically strong hair products that lead to swelling at the nodes on the hair strands. Sometimes you may brush your hair harshly and allow the hair to lose that support from the cuticle layer. This leads to over exposure to the UV rays and synthetic products.

This condition of hair can be either congenital or acquired. If it is congenital then it has been there since you were born. Not many people understand this phenomenon till the time they visit a dermatologist for some other condition or disease of the scalp. This defect sometimes is discovered when you notice that your hair are weaker than several other people you may have met. If this defect is present since birth then it is mostly hereditary and it must have developed at a young age without your noticing it. Certain other conditions due to which this defect develops is metabolic disorders such as abnormal copper and trichothiodystrophy.

Compared to congenital trichorrhexis nodosa acquired on is more prevalent. This is because more and more people have started using chemically strong rather than natural hair care products. People manipulate their hair in all sorts of ways to get shiny hair and the smoothness. With regular use of hair care products hair get over processed.  Too much hairstyling or brushing also results in aggravating the situation further. This puts a lot of stress on your hair and causes this hair defect.

Some people are a lot into perming, cleansing or dying too much and too frequently. This leads to weakening of the cuticle layer that ends up spoiling the hair shaft. There are some hair treatments aimed at treating trichorrhexis nodosa. But people suffering from this hair defect will have to practice a lot of patience. This is because the treatments concentrate on strengthening the hair fiber from its root and this takes time.
