When we think of hair braiding those of us who want to give our age away will refer to them as pigtails. Now that is really going back a distance. For you young ones, this was a hair style where a perfectly centered part was made down the back of the head, with the hair equal on both sides creating two groups of hair. Now one group was taken and broken down into three smaller sections. These were then braided together. The ends were fastened with elastic and then a tiny ribbon was tied onto it. Now if one really wants to be fancy and the pigtails were long enough they would be looped up and pinned to the top of the head. When one looks back, they really were not very attractive but they were practical.
Today’s braids although the basics are the same they seem to be much more elegant. Partly because the braid is usually just one and it is quick thick and large giving it an attractive overall look.
