Contemplating removal of the hair extension conjures up horrible images of painful raking of the scalp, or applying caustic, smelly chemicals to dissolve the bond. Along with this go images of pliers, and other things from a tool box that make you feel you are in somebody else’s nightmare. Actually, nothing could be further from the truth.
When removing what is classed as permanent hair extensions, there are only a few easy steps necessary to do the job. All you need, to start with is a fine toothcomb, and a smaller removal comb like an eyebrow comb. Used in conjunction with olive oil and some de-tangling spray, you can disintegrate the bond and gently tease out the "shed hairs".
To break up the bonding agent start by bending it gently, this will eventually break the bond so that you can use the comb to gently remove the residue and shed hairs. Don’t do this in a hurry, take your time with this procedure and it will work just fine if you use dish soap in combination with a good conditioner.
When removing hair extensions, shed hairs can always be identified at the base, and they can always be gently combed out without damaging your natural hair. Once you dissolve the bond, use some olive oil around the attachments, this will soften any remaining larger pieces that are left and will keep your natural hair from tearing as you comb.
The olive oil can easily be removed with ordinary dish soap that is made for cutting through oil and grease. Usually, all you need is one wash. Done with a massaging action, the dish soap takes out the oils, as opposed to a more caustic shampoo meant for clarifying. After using the dish soap, use a conditioner right after to safeguard your hair.
The best method to use for removal of hair extensions is, after you have removed all the strands, you can start to remove the shed hairs. The best way to do this is with a careful up and down motion. Take your time at first so that you don’t rip or tear your hair. With a little practice and patience, you will soon master this technique that simply removes the shed hairs by going up near the scalp and then down the length of the hair.
Removal of hair extensions should never be done all at once, take your time with it to achieve the optimal results. This way you can remove and replace a section 1 day after washing. If you go through carefully this will work wonderfully, making sure to detangle as described, cleaning off the extension bundle, snipping for a clean look.
The main thing to remember when removing/installing hair extensions is to always take one section at a time, gently combing out the shed hairs with a gentle up, down motion. This will ensure a cleaner, more vibrant look.
