Some individuals will state that they find hairstyles of the past interesting but are not very intrigued by them. Ironically, the saying that history repeats itself is often found when it comes to hairstyles. So if you haven’t seen some of these 1920’s hairstyles return as yet, don’t discard them for they may very be a future trend.
In the 1920’s the hairstyles were for the most part based on anything you could do with long hair because that is what most of the women had. It just seemed to go with the clothing styles of the long ankle length skirts and dresses. As the skirts got shorter and more bold in what they revealed such as the calve of the leg it seemed the hair was also becoming shorter showing more of the neck.
Just as it is today, the stars and starlets of the era set the stage for hair fashion. When Clara Bow made her claim to fame on the stage so did her short haircut. Although the short hair was becoming a favourite, it seemed to maintain a rather plain and masculine look. Just prior to this time, many of the long hairstyles resembled two large swirls that were situated on both sides of the head which resembled large earphones to the point they became dubbed as such.
Although the short hairstyles were becoming accepted with caution, the flappers of the 1920’s were really sporting them. This alone could have created some hesitation of the fine bred ladies who did not want to be associated with the reputation of the flappers.
Just as we do today names were given to the major hairstyles, and the introduction of the short hair mode did not change this. Being as the fashion of the era still dictated the wearing of hats, many of the short hairstyles needed to conform to this. The Bob hairstyle was one of the most versatile for this purpose. It seemed to be the most common and generally accepted style.
Today’s hairstyles that would be classed as a Bob would certainly appear to have more shape and style to it then its ancestor. The Bob back then was cut to the bottom of the ears with a square shape around the base of the head. It would include either bangs, or perhaps a hair part to give it some variety.
No matter what the hairstyle or length the priority was to keep it clean and shiny. This was a statement of fashion. This still remains true today, but fortunately, we have superior hair care products to make our job much easier.
