The first thing that comes to most people’s minds when they think about caps is simple toques. Those, which people figure, are to be worn mostly by kids. Actually, this is far from the truth as there are many styles of caps that are made from wool and they are not restricted to kids. Probably the reason that most people relate wool to toques is because of the warmth that wool is capable of providing. The same is conceived of toques so they are automatically linked together.
There is no wonder that wool is as warm as it as it actually comes from sheep. It is sheared from the sheep and woven into wool fabric. The hats are made from this fabric. Often one pictures the balls of wools as opposed to the wool fabrics. Once you start thinking about wool in its fabric form then having wool caps makes a lot more sense.
The other fallacy that can occur is hat wearers believe that wool caps are only applicable for the winter. It’s true as we said they are extremely warm, but they are also versatile. Wool caps are airy during the summer months as well as it is a material that breathes well. In this case, though it must be constructed from the thinnest of wool materials.
Another real benefit is its ability to repel water. Think of all those sheep that get drenched in the rain. If their coat were not able to repel the rain, they would be water logged and weigh a ton.
Wool materials are great because they tend not to wrinkle and when it comes to caps, they keep their shape well. Many people don’t realize that many baseball caps are made from wool. These caps are becoming great collector’s items. Being made from wool if they are protected properly and preserved correctly, they will last a very long time amongst a collection.
If it is not your intention to collect the wool caps but just wear one then cleaning is an important issue. First, you don’t want to throw it in the washing machine or in a pan of hot water. No doubt if you do this, you will get some shrinkage. Hand wash carefully using tepid water and avoid harsh detergents. Make sure you restore it to its natural shape while it is drying. Again, don’t even think about throwing it in the dryer, just let it air dry. If you care for your wool cap carefully, you will get several years of use out of it.
